James Neon
2021
James is a costume designer, stylist, tailor, and fabricator—with credits that include a 2017 Emmy nomination for Portlandia and membership in Costume Designers Guild Local 892, IATSE Local 488, and OMPA. When she asked me to design a logo, she gave me complete creative freedom, trusting my personal understanding of her as a friend and artist. James is bold, driven, and confident in her craft—a little extravagant, a little elusive, but always thoughtful. She and her partner even changed their last name to Neon, which felt like the perfect symbol of her electric personality and standout presence. I leaned into that energy and let myself get loose and experimental with the concepts, pulling from psychedelic influences, 90s alt aesthetics, and a rough-but-glamorous edge. She ended up loving—and using—two of the final designs, a choice that bucks branding norms but suits her perfectly. The result is less a logo and more an emblem of creative freedom, individuality, and lived-in style. It’s a visual reflection of someone who was never meant to blend in.
